Thriving economies rely on a skilled workforce. Here in San Antonio, our workforce strategy focuses on building our people from within to directly support the needs of regional employers that provide high-wage, high-growth jobs. In partnership with our corporate community, we supplement that core strategy with talent retention and attraction programs as well.
We believe that when we invest in our people and place, we will continue to grow more jobs for San Antonians. Ultimately, we see this strategy not only as a way to attract more jobs, but a way to empower greater economic mobility for our community.
This month, we continued work on our Talent Pipeline Management initiative, as well as kicked off recruitment for two of our ongoing workforce development programs, Alamo Fellows and Summer Internships.
Alamo Fellows is a talent retention initiative, focused on connecting local first-generation college students in STEM majors to career opportunities in SATX. Major employers from across the region including H-E-B, Spurs Sports & Entertainment, Bank of America, Joeris, and SWBC have leaned in to support the program, paving the pathway for these students to grow their professional networks and see themselves building careers in San Antonio after graduation. We are now recruiting the second cohort of college juniors to join the program.
One of our foundational school-to-career programs to build awareness about potential career paths, Summer Internships, will soon kick off its ninth season bringing paid internships to high school students. This summer, employers like USAA, Southwest Research Institute, and University Health System have committed to hiring paid high school interns. We’re working to recruit additional employers to participate in hiring this key group of students to start building their career experience before high school graduation.
Our regional economic competitiveness is directly aligned with the availability of a readily skilled workforce. These programs are successful because of the direct engagement from our regional employers.
There are many things that San Antonio does extremely well. At the top of that list, it’s collaborative action. When our community comes together, great things happen. These investments in our workforce continue to strengthen our community for those residents here today and those we will welcome here in the future.
